Being called a “Good Jake” is one of the highest compliments in the fire service, recognizing skill, courage, and reliability. The term is believed to come from the “J-Key,” a telegraph key used in Boston’s early street-corner fire alarm box system. Firefighters skilled at sending Morse code alarms were known as “J-Keys,” which eventually evolved into the nickname “Jake.”
